While much of the written history of the recliner starts in the early Twentieth Century, the recliner chair dates back much further. The earliest recliner chairs actually appeared in the late Eighteenth Century, and were functionally similar to todays recliners. The goal was always to allow the user to sit upright or recline back with the legs and feet off the floor. What has been dubbed by many designers as motion furniture, the recliner has been with us in one form or another for over two hundred years. Modeled after the chaise lounge, the long history of the recliner has seen this popular piece of furniture go from simple to fully motorized. Thought to be an American invention, the recliner has its roots as far back as Napoleon.
The cushion can be made from fiber or foam. Fiber cushion is filled with synthetic loose fibers. It is very durable but you wont be able to maintain the cushions shape. As a result, one area may have little padding while another area will have a lot of padding. Foam cushion is able to mold the persons body contour effectively. High quality foam cushion is made from memory foam. Gel cushion is able to distribute the persons weight evenly. Because it is made from gel, the manufacturer adds a cushion to reduce the pressure. Gel cushion is heavy and bulky so it is hard to move around. Air cushion is lightweight and able to relieve the pressures from the body. Air cushion may require more maintenance.
Depending on a users needs, power recliners come in many variations. The first type is the two position chair. Depending on the manufacture, most two position recliners are the lower costing entry point into the market. Costing less than three position and infinite position recliners, the goal is to provide the necessary requirements to lift a person in and out of a chair at the lowest price possible. They typically recline to a 45 degree position suitable for watching TV. Sleeping in a two position power recliner may be difficult for a person if they require a more flat sleeping surface.
The third level of recliner is massage chair recliners. The main difference with a massage recliner is that it has a roller mechanism for the back. The rollers are able to perform a variety of massage techniques such as kneading and tapping. Most massaging chair recliners have a number of automatic massage programs. They can deliver a full body massage at the press of a button. There are a number of specialized programs to meet a diversity of needs. Many massage chairs have manual massage modes. This enables you to target a specific area with a specific technique. This is great for targeting a sore spot or avoiding areas that you do not want to apply a massage. Massaging chairs come with an LCD on the remote control. This enables you to see the activities of the massage chair in real time. Massage chairs enable you to select a variety of different massage treatments when you need them.
If you are planning on purchasing a second hand Lazy Boy recliner, or even an "as is" or clearance item from an authorized dealer, your purchase will not carry the Limited Lifetime Warranty available from Lazy Boy. You may not be able to purchase replacement parts for your recliner if it is a discontinued model. However, you may still find a good deal even if you take these issues into consideration. Since the recliner has several moving parts, you would be strongly advised to try it out first before you buy. Buying a recliner over the Internet or sight unseen can be risky. Remember that your recliner could also be damaged in shipping and you will want to take special care that it arrives at your home in the same condition as you tested it out.
